I have researched into 2 different artists that are both within the same pop-rock genre that our band is in, and I have analysed their work on different social medias, specifically when leading up to the release of an album.
Now I am going to compare the two in a conclusion to this research project. This is so that if I did miss anything when doing this, I can perhaps pick up on something new, but it is also to see which social media account that I researched into is more likely to be more similar to the one that we create for our band.
What do both social media accounts have in common/what techniques did they both use?
Despite the fact that accounts that I researched into were not only a different artist, but also on a different social media, I did run into a lot of similarities between the two.
1. Firstly, they both use hashtags a lot in their comments/tweets to try and build awareness and a following for a particular hashtag.
2. Secondly, they both tag a lot of people on their posts as well.
3. Thirdly, they both use a lot of videos with their comments and for their posts, either teasing performances or teasing themes of the album using graphics. This is a clear example of them engaging their audience, as it builds up a sense of anticipation for them by teasing them with graphics and videos from the shoots of the album.
4. Also, they both seem to try and connect with the audience, either to try and find out which song the audiences favourite from the album is, or just to try and connect with them better through doing interview Q&A type videos and posting them. This interaction with the audience and engagement and addressing of their fans is clearly something that they both did very well, and that panned out very well for both of them.
5. They both also promoted the release of the single (which came out before the album - both with a big featuring artist) almost as much as they promoted the album itself - with multiple posts, creating hashtags, tagging people, performances and more.
This shows that not only the two had a lot of similarities, but they also engaged with their audiences and shared some similar techniques in doing so. However, I do believe that one of the artists that I researched was better at doing this than the other. In my opinion, I thought that Miley Cyrus has a more sought after social media presence and did a better job than Avril Lavigne at promoting her new work on her platform than Avril did, and I mainly think this for a few reasons:
1. Miley started to promote her album at a similar time before the release as Avril Lavigne did, but she was able to post more about it than Avril, and so the hype for her album was higher as she posted more persistently and more consistently about it.
2. Also, she got her songs out there in as many ways as possible, with a stripped down version, live performances, and of course the original album songs.
3. Thirdly, she also has more interaction with the audience, not only with posts asking the followers to comment their favourite songs, but also doing Q&A videos.
4. Finally, I also thought that Miley did a better job of promoting her album whilst still staying true and still staying within the conventions that are in the genre of pop-rock.
I am taking into account that I did review Miley's use of social media on her instagram account which is debatably an easier platform and a network that people post more commonly to promote their product on, but I still think that Miley did do a better job nonetheless.
What can I take away from this research project:
Although I already did a section in both of my presentations about how I would adapt the information I have gathered, and how I would use it on my own social media platform, I think there are some general things that I really need to consider, since the scale of our operation is so much smaller than the two campaigns that I have analysed, and not only that, but our band is at the start of it's campaign, whereas these two are well into their campaigns. Here are some of the things that I need to consider, take away from this research project, and also some things that we could implement on our bands social media accounts.
Things that we could implement on our social media:
- Building up to releasing multiple things - like singles, videos, and eventually the album.
- Teasing the digipak artwork / teasing the theme of the album and video through the use of graphics and images.
- Using videos just as much as we use images.
- Using hashtags and tagging anyone we possibly can tag, so that the campaign can look bigger than it may actually be.
- Reminding the audience of release dates, and adding release dates to the bios and other stuff like that.
Things we can take away from the project:
- How many posts each person did leading up to the release.
- The fact that they teased the album with a release of a single - but we cannot do that, as we don't have the music
- That we need to take as many photos possible if we decide to do a photoshoot style digipak album cover, so that we can have some photos to tease before the release.
Things that we might need to consider:
- Firstly, we really need to consider that our social media and our music campaign is for a band, whereas the two social medias that I just analysed were both singular artists with no group. This could potentially put a few spanners in the works, and make it more difficult, but it could also be a good thing, as we have more members of the band, and so we can get more photos (as there are more people to take pictures of), and we might be able to tease even the different members of the group.
- Also, we need to consider that we are creating a social media for a band at the start of their music campaign, whereas these two are well into their campaigns.
- A general thing that we should consider could be something like we should take into account the amount of posts that they did before the album was released compared with how many after, to see if we should do more on one side of the release, or keep it even.
- Also, we cannot do certain things like create hype by releasing a single, and so we need to consider another few avenues that we could possibly go down to try and build up the hype for the album using a different method.
To conclude, I believe that this endeavour into researching different artists use of different social medias went well, and I think that it will help us greatly when it comes to creating our own social media provided that we take into account the fact that every music campaign is different, and the campaign that we are designing is at a very different stage to the musicians that I analysed online.
